Mark Molenaar is a South African painter and sculptor working primarily in oil and cast resin. Growing up near Cape Town, South Africa, Mark was influenced by the splendor of the ocean and wildlife he interacted with regularly and chooses subjects for his art that reflect this. Although he studied art in school, his early career led him into marketing research, leaving limited time for creative practice. He did, however, study classical techniques under Ryno Swart and refined his expressive drawing style through caricature training with Derek Bauer. He has returned to art with renewed focus and his sculptural practice continues to evolve through ongoing mentorship with Earle Parker.
Molenaar’s work captures the tension between abstraction and the natural world, often distilling form, movement, and emotion into simplified shapes and atmospheric colour. His art taps into archetypal memories, moods, and internal narratives, creating echoes of the familiar. Through each piece, he uncovers fragments of stories that feel already lived, reflecting them back to the viewer. This reflective process invites a shared recognition— a connection through the universal emotions and memories that reside within us all.
